Old Schwin Bike and gears?

20 Mar

I hav an old Schwinn Crosscuts seven speed bike for men with the Glen-Bar as handle bars. Since the gas prices are going up and I am getting heavier due to not exercising enough, I thought it would be good to save some money while losing some weight by biking to work since I only live about 5 miles away. My question is, since I used the bike and that was years ago, I had problem with the gears in that the derailer would always put my chain between the frame and the rear crank and sometimes the main crank up front, there would be slipping of the chain and the crankset. I think the crank set is Shimano Altus A10, 7 speed, rapidplus. I want to know if it was possible to change the crankset for this bike and what is your suggestion for that change.
Does anyone have suggestion for an upgrade on an old bike like this? Eventually, I am going to learn how to maintain my bike, I actually have a book on it but I do not have no where the tools to do all that work. In addition, it is something that I would like up in running when I get the chance to start biking again.

Product Description
A bicycle gear, or gear ratio, or speed refers to the rate at which the rider’s legs turn compared to the rate at which the wheels turn. Most modern bicycles have multiple gears, so multiple gear ratios are possible. Different gears and ranges of gears are appropriate for different people and styles of cycling. Multi-speed bicycles allow selection of the appropriate gear ratio for optimum efficiency or comfort, and to suit the circumstances, e.g. it may be comfortable to use one gear when cycling downhill, another when cycling on a flat road, and yet another when cycling uphill. What Would The Value Of A Schwinn Tempo Road Bike W/ Shimano 105 Components Boipace Gears, & Rack Be Worth?

20 Sep

It is my brothers bike & he wants me to sell it because I ride a bike all the time ( a home made recumbent ) and he thinks I know something about bikes.
If I sell it I want to get him a very good price but be reasonable to whoever buys it.
I don’t know how old it is (it is a seven speed with index shifter on the down tube) shimano components
It has probably been lightly riden but I can’t be certain of that.
It looks very clean with little or no wear.
Any suggestions on how to sell it ? Not Ebay as we are not members / ?
Craigs list?
a local swap( how would one find a local swap)?
others
Should we he me wait till christmas or spring to try and sell or do it now?
How would you list it to get the most out of it?
