Ever seen those things where the rider sits down and the pedals are in front, rather than below? I think I read somewhere that they are called recumbent bikes.
They look more expensive, harder to steer, harder to see, and harder to fit in your trunk. So why are they so commonly found on the road?
Maybe they are slightly more comfortable. Maybe it is easier on the knees. Maybe some guys are worried about sterility. But it seems like the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Does anyone know where I can get info on Tour Easy Recumbent Bikes? I’ve tried google searching but can’t find much info. I would like to get the manufacturer’s web page, but google doesn’t take to it.
I have 2 of these bikes I would like to sell ( inherited them), but can’t find any info as to the value. There aren’t any on Craig’s list or Ebay to compare them to, and the local bike shops aren’t very good at giving honest appraisals. I took a Merlin titanium bike around to our local shops to get the value estimated, they all offered to buy for around $800.00, they said that’s all it was worth, sold it on Craig’s list for $2,500.00 so I don’t really trust them anymore. I know what they were bought for when new, the large black one with a fairing and rack was bought for just over 5 grand. and the smaller red one sold new for $2500.00. If anyone knows anything about these bikes or knows a website that has resale info please let me know. I’ve already tried google and craigslist.

My grandparents gave me 2 Schwinn bicycles that they have had in their basement forever. One is a Schwinn Varsity and the other is a Schwinn Collegiate 3. The Varsity seems to be older than the Collegiate. My grandparents cannot remember when they bought the bikes, but they think it was between the mid 60s to the early 70s. I need to know how I can properly identify the year in which they were made. Also, if you could give me an estimate of their value, I would greatly appreaciate it!

I can ride an upright bike well. I was reading on Wikipedia about recumbent bikes, and they said that they take an amazing amount of balance skill to master in order to start and stop properly, stating that it may be several years before you get comfortable on them.
However, other websites and bike dealerships say that it takes anywhere from two hours to two weeks to be able to ride them at an okay level and be comfortable with them (even if at a lower skill/strength level due to the different feel/muscles involved).
So, honestly, are recumbent that hard to ride, or can you get used to them pretty quick? Do you need any professional training to get used to them?
Contributions from those experienced in the transition from upright to recumbent are greatly welcomed!

They’re really interesting bikes, and they’re supposedly much faster than a normal bicycle. So why don’t more people ride them? – I’d love to have a recumbent tandem or sociable.

Hi,
I have several questions about recumbent bicycles:
1. What are the advantages or disadvantages of having two 26″ wheels versus a front 20″ wheel and a rear 26″ wheel?
2. It seems that most bents have nine speeds, while my current bike has 24 speeds. Is nine speeds sufficient for a bent?
3. I would like to purchase a bent that can tour so it must accommodate racks, but it also must be relatively fast and have higher end components (without getting too carried away). Is that type of bent available for around $1700 or less? If so, which one would you recommend?
4. The bent rider’s feet and legs sit “high” above the ground on the pedals. Could this high feet/leg position contribute to a fall-over because the rider could not plant his or her feet on the ground quickly enough in an emergency situation?
5. If you own a bent, what do you especially love about the bike? And what do you dislike about it.
Thanks!
David
